Frequently Asked Questions

Lux E Tenebris …light out of darkness.

What is Freemasonry?

It’s the oldest, largest, and most prestigious fellowship of men in the world. We are a fraternity as well as a charitable institution doing the work of a civic club. We are a fraternity of men–helping each other and bringing men of good morals and ethics together in our community. The members of the fraternity support local, state and national service projects by giving away almost $1.5 million every day as a charity.

What is the Scottish Rite?

Simply put, the Scottish Rite is but one organization covered by the umbrella of Masonic Organizations, worldwide. It is one step on the Masonic path toward self-discovery and personal enrichment. The Scottish Rite takes great pride in being the philosophical branch of Freemasonry and seeks to explore the mysteries and meanings of ourselves and the world around us. The Scottish Rite Mason is also a Master Mason of good standing in a Blue Lodge.

What are Master Masons?

Master masons are masons of the 3rd degree. In the blue lodge contexts, that means a member has taken all of the degrees, passed all of the requirements and completed all of the steps necessary to become an expert mason.

What is the mission of Freemasonry?

To promote a way of life that binds like-minded men in a worldwide brotherhood that transcends all religious, ethnic, cultural, social, and educational differences; by teaching the great principles of brotherly love, relief and truth; and by the outward expression of these through its fellowship, its compassion and concern, to find ways in which to serve God, family, country, neighbors, and self.

Are you associated with a specific religion?

The Scottish Rite is not associated with any specific religion and is, in fact, open to any religion. Our only requirement is the belief in a supreme being.

How often do you hold lodge meetings?

The Scottish Rite holds meetings once a month. Masonic Lodges hold meetings once or twice a month.

What do Masons do?

The most important thing we do is take care of each other and our families. We are a fraternity. That means we help other Masons, treat them as brothers, support them no matter where they live – and build friendships all over the world. Not very many organizations do that today. We also help others. That’s why we give almost $1.5 million a day to charity. Most of our money goes to help kids. We rank among the top 10 best-liked charitable organizations in America, but we also teach leadership skills, and help men to lead ethics-based lives. We promote good relationships and strong family values, and we try to do something to strengthen the family unit every day.
